The bearded, thirty-year-old sitter is identified by the letter in his hand, which is addressed "To the honorable and pious Derick Berck, London, at the Steelyard [.]." The other inscription on the cartellino refers to a passage from Virgil's Aeneid that reads, "[Perchance even this distress] will someday be a joy to recall." The Latin quotation on the sheet of paper in the foreground, reading "Truth breeds hatred," comes from the Roman comedy Andria by Terence, popular among Humanists. He began such commissions by capturing the likeness of the sitter on paper. This portrait of an unidentified twenty-eight-year-old man can be directly linked to a preparatory study (Royal Collection, Windsor Castle). The masterfully executed drawing was used for transfer, since its incised lines match the contours of the portrait precisely. Holbein left the painting's execution to a workshop assistant. The painting is close to the manner of Holbein, but the attention paid to decorative effects and linear details at the expense of life-like portrayal of the sitter is indicative of workshop production.
